Challenge #4

Fun House
Journaling: What is making you smile these days? Create a top 10 list of anything you want to talk about.
Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.

Finding new ways to be creative is definitely making smile these days. In addition to taking up needlepoint last month, which I love doing and talked about on Day 1 (and I have ordered additional canvases to work on!), I've also finally transplanted a terrarium I made last year and plan to create more of these.

I work in a law firm, and every year we have summer associates come in, of course. Law firms want to entice summer associates to come back once they graduate, so they're treated to a lot of nice stuff: dinner events, outings to baseball games, etc. My firm also does events during the workday, and one of last year's events was a "crafting terrariums" session. A woman came in with materials and there were trays set up at all the places for each person to work. You got to pick out a container, any succulents you wanted, and then she taught everyone the steps for planting and how to care for the plants, then we spent the rest of the time decorating the terrariums with moss, etc. It was a lot of fun and I created a nice terrarium of succulents that not only survived under my black thumb, but outgrew the container.

I'm planning to get more succulents and create some more terrariums. Pretty soon I'll have a whole shelf of these.

I've also been trying to make my surroundings, both at home and at work, as beautiful and as comfortable as possible, and that's making me smile too.

Whale path, swan road

I returned home last night after a week's holiday in Shetland, where the weather was a delightfully consistent 14-15 degrees, the views were dramatic, and the ocean was a restorative and constant presence. Thank you to all who offered advice a few posts back — between your tips and our own research, Matthias and I enjoyed a trip that was a perfect mix of outdoorsy walking and views, museums and learning, and good food and serendipitous wandering.

I did journal a little bit while I was there, so if you want more details of what the trip involved, click behind the cut to see the transcript.

I would highly, highly recommend Shetland as a place to spend some time, especially if you live in the UK, and will happily expand on any of what I've written above in the comments, if you're interested. I've also got a lot of photos up over at [instagram.com profile] ronnidolorosa — it's a very photogenic place!

Murderbot fanvid rec: Bohemian Like You

I watched this like 4 times in a row. It definitely contain spoilers, but it's divorced enough from the actual plotline of the show that if you don't mind SOME spoilers and want to get an idea of what the show is like, this might be a nice one to watch. (Warning for some gore.)

I finished my reread of Bleach and I've now watched through episode 273, which I think means I've watched about 80 episodes of Bleach in a couple of weeks. Unhinged behaviour. I think for the most part the animation of the lust arc was pretty good! Captured a lot of the feeling of reading it, though it was faintly amusing they didn't show the exact moment of Ichigo stabbing Ishida, which blunted that impact a little. It had not ever occurred to me before that Ulquiorra's final attack on Ichigo was because he was moved by Orihime desperately wanting Ichigo not to kill Ishida, but I feel like that's the implication in the anime, and I'm willing to internalise that interpretation of it. It certainly works with the things Ulquiorra says just before he fades away (oh man, and with Orihime stepping forward to try to grab his hand a moment too late, that always gets me; tbh the arc is equally good for Ulquiorra/Orihime or Ichigo/Orihime).

Back to the rest of the fights and blergh Yammy. Not that I dislike what the manga does with Yammy, but the thing with this whole arc being so long in the manga and yet the anime expands it even more is that sometimes the anime gives an entire fight scene to something briefly touched over in the original and it's often kind of boring.

Like everyone else on the planet I have now seen KPop Demon Hunters. It's cute! I see why half a dozen people I follow on Tumblr are now gaga for it. It commits to its premise 100%. Sony animation is doing some real interesting stuff and making some fun choices.

Murderbot fanficlet: Sanctuary Moon forum flame wars

[personal profile] scioscribe gave me a delightful Murderbot TV-verse prompt, hidden because it's somewhat spoilery for the finale:
Click to viewPost-finale Gurathin, burdened with all these memories of Sanctuary Moon, still doesn't like the show but now can't resist getting into nitpicky arguments about it on futuristic forums, where he and Murderbot keep crossing paths and gradually realize who they're talking to and get very fond about it without admitting to anything.

D&D is a fun hobby that is nothing like doing homework

I am 98% of the way through my character conversions. I still need to note errata that has come out since for my character. See that full sheet of paper nearest the camera? That is most of what should go into one tiny square on my character sheet, but obvs it wont fit so I made a reference sheet. When I took the picture I hadn't realized I'd missed a few things.

Not shown: multiple tracker sheets for things like milestone leveling

And that is just me working on Alec. Tristan wasn't quiet as bad, but I still need to finish one of his reference sheets. Alec is my Leyfarers main, but Tristan is my alt so I can put off finishing him. So many rules changed for my main. Like, he still has Favored Enemy, but those words point to a completely different game mechanic than they did in the old rules. Ditto Stonecunning, ditto a lot of stuff.

This is why I am unlikely to write The Gang Plays D&D for most canons, but The Gang Gets Pulled Into a Let's Play For Charity has a lot of potential

Another Murderbot TV fic, Temperature Flash, and Hurt/Comfort-Ex

I wrote another Murderbot 1x10 episode missing scene.

Echoes (gen, 2500 words, Gurathin-centric)
Summary redacted because of spoilers; basically Gurathin's POV on some of the events of the finale.

A few notes on the fic (spoilery for both fic and episode):
under here• I kept tweaking Gura's final line to Murderbot, so it might be a bit different if you read an earlier version. (I felt like I needed to soften it from how it originally was. They are hard to write! Especially keeping their edge when they're so soft in the final scene.)

• We know Murderbot has trouble figuring out what it's feeling, but I also think it's very plausible that Gurathin has the same problem, if not as badly. He's repressed so much for so long. Asking himself to identify exactly what emotions he's feeling is something that some therapist or other taught him to do.

• This is not necessary context for the fic and it's entirely subject to interpretation, but what I was thinking when it wrote it is that Murderbot using "its" for augmented humans in its last line of dialogue to Gurathin is actually MB doing roughly the same thing (except more emotionally positive) that Gurathin is doing in the episode of the show where he's arguing with Mensah and calls it "he" and then corrects himself to "it." It's over-identifying and doesn't even realize that it's doing so; I mean, it's worried about Gurathin, obviously, and that's why it's here, but there's also a certain amount of "we are the same kind of creature" going on here, even though it doesn't realize it's relating to him on that level. It knows that he might have damaged himself with the data overload because it also knows that it might damage itself in a similar way, and he has much less storage to handle it. And it's just kind of subconsciously being concerned about him as it might be concerned about a fellow construct, or itself, having taken damage. Of course neither of them parses all of that consciously.

In other events, Terrible Temperature Troubles Flash Exchange revealed gifts tonight! I got two absolutely delightful gifts - An Official Complaint Against the Universe (Babylon 5, Vir & Londo, hypothermia and h/c) and Consequences of Cold (Biggles, Biggles/EvS, snuggling when chilled). I loved them!

And finally, [community profile] hurtcomfortex author reveals were tonight. I wrote Sleepover (MASH, 1700 words, Margaret POV) with huddling for warmth and light comfort after nightmares.

I got a new record today. Mr Natural by the Bee Gees. Found it at an op shop, a little worn, some ringwear on the sleeve and a little dusty, but really what is "worn" if not "well-loved"? It's not my favourite album from the band (I already own my favourite), but it does have one of my favourite songs of theirs on it, and I'm overall pretty pleased to own it. I've been meaning to get it for a while. Maybe seeing it now was some kind of fate?

[Daf Yomi] Maseches Avoda Zara, perek 1 - Lifnei Eideihen

Fun with idolatry and "I'm doing Avoda Zara" jokes! The perek ended yesterday but RL is being busy.

The absolute requisite note on Avoda Zara is one that gets stressed constantly, which is that this is referring specifically to the religious groups amongst whom the tanaim and amoraim were living, and only them. Among the reasons the commentators have said this for a long time is 1) actual real differences between the avoda zarah described in the mishna/gemara and the goysche practices they lived amongst, combined with 2) because if they kept to all of this, there would be many practical problems, because they were a lot more interconnected by that time and working in specific professions, and 3) the outside world thinks it gets a say in Jewish religious texts and would be violently offended if this refers to them.

But definitely there were times when dealing with Artscroll commentary when I had to snap and actually look up when the Meiri lived, and it's like, ah, 13th century France, I understand completely.

Murderbot TV, season the first

So I hated the first part of episode 10, and liked the last ~8 minutes, those were great, truly great. But I really didn't need what came before that; I liked how Murderbot slipped away at the end of the first novella. Oh well.

In general, overall, I really enjoyed Murderbot The Television Show, although there were parts of it I had to skip or not watch. They did a really good job at translating a novella into a tv show; the changes were understandable and made sense for the medium, even when they were ones I disliked. The show fleshed out the characters very well, and they had just so so so so much fun with the in-universe tv shows.

If this show has one thesis, it is Murderbot = Gurathin, and with my complaints about the first part of episode 10, I did like how it went so, are you not convinced that Murderbot = Gurathin yet? Here, let me show it to you again.

Anyway, I assume five seconds after the end of ep10, ART says hello. (okay that's probably not ART. But it would make sense to begin s2 immediately after s1 ends)

Finished the season finale, immediately turned around and wrote an episode tag.

Arrow (~2K words, gen, Mensah & Gurathin)
Set right during/after the end of the last scene in the episode.

I also saw on Tumblr that it's been renewed for a season two. Something delightful to look forward to!

Description:
Two full-colour images of Daisuke and Monty, one in the present and one in flashback to their younger days. The first is fully saturated and features the two walking close together with Monty in the lead. Daisuke's hat is tipped forward over his eyes as he looks down with a faint smile and puts away his flask. Monty is watching him over his shoulder, likewise smiling and seemingly mid-conversation with him. Above them, larger and more faded out, is a memory of them sitting together decades ago, Daisuke speaking while Monty watches him with soft-eyed attention.

Very Minor Spoilers for Episode 6 )
This piece is just so sweet. The whole "getting the band back together" element of Cloudward, Ho! has been right up my alley, and I like that their separation was more about losing something that was holding them together rather than a big falling-out that created any ill will. It's made for a great story so far about some highly competent older characters reuniting warmly with old friends and working well together because of their shared history.

I love how the artist has captured this. The flashback looms large over the two men, creating a sense of those past conversations fuelling their present ease with each other and shared direction. It spot-on conveys Monty's wonderful attentiveness to people and suggests a lot in imagining the usually laconic Daisuke so engaged in talking to him. As someone who loves the aesthetics of this season, I'm also very much here for the details in their outfits and the little ways they've changed over the years.
